Estuary Artworks 2012

Malcolm Smith Gallery One & Two

This mixed media exhibition features finalist works selected for the Estuary Artworks Awards 2012. Estuary Artworks aims to raise the profile of this critical waterway, movtivating communities to work together for it's protection, enhancement and restoration.

$9,000 prize money to be awarded. Judges are Chris Saines (Director of Auckland Art Gallery) and TJ McNamara (NZ Herald Arts and Features Writer). Contact Melissa Elliott exhibitions@uxbridge.org.nz for an entry form.

A selection of finalists in this competition will discuss their artworks and inspiration

 

*Thursday 23 Feb 9.30am - 11am RANGER GUIDED WALK

Come and learn about the flora and fauna at your local estuary. Enjoy the great outdoors and make new friends. Meeting point is Waka Aranga Reserve, Prince Regent Drive (opposite Pigeon Mountain playground). Average level of fitness and mobility required.

*Saturday 25 Feb 3.30pm - MARGARET MORLEY

Geological and ecological exploration of the estuary with Auckland Museum Research Associate Margaret Morley. Meet at the Northern end of main beach, Bucklands Beach. Wear enclosed shoes and bring any NZ shells you'd like identifed. Enquiries contact Margaret 576 8323

 

*Wednesday 7 March 12.30pm - 2.30pm - BEACH CLEAN UP

With support from Sir Peter Blake Trust, Westpac and Auckland Council, we will be cleaning up along the Estuary to preserve this vital waterway.

Uxbridge Sculpture Symposium

31 March & 1 April

Barry Curtis Park - 201 / 203 Chapel Road, Flat Bush

This is a community orientated event where the local and wider community is invited to watch New Zealand sculptors create large scale artworks in a public space. It offers $2000 for the winning artwork, but also allows people of all ages and nationalities to gather at the park and watch art in action. There will be chidren's creative stations, coffee and food stalls as well as discussions on public art. FREE

 

Children's activities -

Flat Boat making Saturday only, 11am - 1pm

Flag making Saturday 10am - 3pm, Sunday 10am - 1pm

Produce a flag which will become part of an ever changing scultpure onsite for the duration of the symposium.

Tour Of Duty

Malcolm Smith Gallery One 

Trish Campbell’s installation Tour of Duty portrays two decorative objects, the tie and doily. As a distinct item, each tie and doily are both anonymous in origin, but when unified, re-emerge as a ‘decoration’ to acknowledge the sacrifice, love, dedication and commitment in domestic partnership for the service of another.

Hohepa provides vocational and community participation services for young people with intellectual disabilities. Artists use art as a way of developing expression and also nurturing their development in cognitive, social and personal areas.

Drawings and Recent Small Paintings, Michael Armstrong

Michael Armstrong’s drawings and small paintings are a part of a longer series of satirical works that look at contemporary social and political changes around the challenges to democracy from corporate power.  The artist examines the individual motives behind the desire for power.

Rewi Alley Photography Exhibition

The most famous New Zealander in China – Rewi Alley contributed perhaps more than any other foreigner to the Chinese revolution. 2012 is the 40th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relationship between New Zealand and China. We respectfully present Rewi Alley Photography Exhibition to memorialize his contribution to Sino-NZ friendship.
