TOWARDS ABSTRACTION

Tutor: Brendan McGorry

This course takes students of any level through the deconstruction process from observational drawing through to the abstract. Touching on Cubism, Surrealism, Action Painting, Colourfield Painting and Expressionism, the students will enjoy a number of experimental challenges before being given the support to apply these new skills and attitudes to a direction of their own choice. Class runs for 8 weeks.

AWAKEN THE ARTIST WITHIN

Experiment and explore your creative side. If you’ve never painted before, or it’s been a long time since you last put paint to canvas, this class is for you. Discover or rediscover how to create your own abstract works of art using acrylics and mixed media. Enrich and enjoy your life with 3 hours of free expression! No artists oil colours please. Class runs for 8 weeks.

DRAWING & PAINTING WITH JAMES LAWRENCE

Tutor: James Lawrence (BA, BFA, MFA)

Enjoy a fun, free form, fast paced class, full of ideas and techniques for drawing and acrylic painting. Start with drawing then move on to build texture and explore different painting application techniques. Learn to use non conventional materials, such as ‘No More Nails’ and flea combs, as well as more conventional materials to construct that ‘masterpiece’! Class runs for 8 weeks.

THE JOY OF PAINTING

Tutor: James Lawrence (BA, BFA, MFA)

This mixed media class includes tuition in acrylics and watercolours. Various techniques are covered, along with basic composition and colour use. The class includes demonstrations in all media and is suitable for students of all abilities. Class runs for 8 weeks.

ART TO START WITH

Tutor: Ken Tanner

The class is designed for beginners and relatively inexperienced painters who have an interest in realistic art. The aim is to provide students with a technique which uses the medium of acrylic paint to prepare realistic paintings. The course will cover many of the principles relating to art which will apply to any style of painting. Class runs for 8 weeks.

LIGHT, LIFE AND ENERGY

 Ria Van Rooyen art tutor for five years on South Island CTV encouraged many artists to paint and have fun while they learn. She teaches in all mediums and loves abstract and realism equally. Beginners welcome and for the more advanced if you feel like it’s time to loosen up, then this course is for you.

PLUNGE INTO COLOUR

Tutor: Ria Van Rooyen

Advanced artist: if you want to get out of a rut and need change then this class is for you, and for beginners who always wanted to paint but you don't know how to, then all you need is to want to. Ria has been teaching workshops for 25 years in South Africa, Austrialia and New Zealand. Make sure you don't miss out, your life will never be the same!

MOMYAMA GIRL

Tutor: Kathie Hewitt

Create your own 'Momoyama' Girl using classical techniques dating back to the 17th century. Learn how to gild, create and paint the rich costume worn by the Momoyama Girl demonstrating the japanese art of textile design and manufature at its finest, both in technique and design of robes. This is a carefully prepared project providing strong direction and structure; but with plenty of flexibility for open interpretations, and with particular emphasis on individual creative growth. ART HISTORY SERIES

Tutor: Tony Morgan

A series of lecture/discussions aimed at people keen to learn about Art. Discover how to read or analyse a work of art. Acquire knowledge about particular style of art, periods and artist. Become familiar with the rich cultures of the Renaissance or early 20th Century Modernism. Find out about art in New Zealand. An excellent course for those planning a trip overseas or who want to know more about art.

PASTEL

Tutor: Marie Sanders  

This class is for students who have had some experience with the pastel medium or are complete beginners and want to give it a go. Over the term students will work to produce a finished still life, portrait and landscape pastel drawings and in the process develop their own skills and confidence.
